What is an AI representation? Is it an authentic, original synthesis, a collaboration, a cheap fake? As source material swirls around a creator's mind, is their analog, material-based creation more authentic or original? When does the application of a human produced tool remove 'humanness' from a work of art? Does a paintbrush do such, a camera, a computer, Latent Diffusion? 

Simulacrum.001 is the first piece in a series exploring a human x AI integration, referencing the history of classical figuration and generative art.

Not long ago, "AI" was a word of wonder and amazement, showcasing rapid technological evolution and magical capabilities—until perceptions changed. As technologies advance, they always raise questions, many for reasons that should be taken seriously. Sometimes information gets twisted due to lack of research or knowledge, leading to misinformation spreading to the masses, making something once innovative an enemy.

The hardest part of learning is unlearning. Only by rotating your view are you able to see past the interlaced picture.

This artwork interlaces two images within every second pixel. When resized or zoomed, depending on the device, it causes a glitch, revealing the original AI-generated image and the finished artwork combining techniques of digital and traditional art. This effect serves as the core of the work's idea, illustrating how changing perspective can reveal more than what we can initially see.

This iconic line isn't just a piece of movie dialogue; it's a window into a future where machines operate on a completely different level. AI tools are becoming extensions of ourselves, not replacements. 
Imagine the Terminator saying, "I am a machine, but I can assist you in creating art that moves the soul" highlighting how AI can empower human creativity, not render it obsolete.

"The Recursive Self" delves into the intersection of AI and human experiences. It explores how artificial replicas can supplant human interactions and materiality. The work highlights the notion of a constructed reality, whilst simultaneously hinting at the digital underpinnings that shape our world. Technology's profound influence on our environment is emphasised, symbolising the significant ways it alters our perceptions.  

The title itself refers to the concept of recursion, reflecting the iterative learning processes of AI systems through recursive feedback loops. Additionally, it touches on a metaphysical conundrum: the ongoing, cyclical journey to define meaning in a landscape increasingly dominated by artificial simulations.

"The Desolation of Art" offers a multi-layered interpretation that delves into the themes of AI in art, societal change, and the evolutionary process, all intertwined with the notion of sacrifice.

The ape persona symbolizes humanity's inherent creative instincts and the evolutionary journey of art. The shotgun represents the disruptive force of AI technology, which, while heralding advancements and innovation, also poses threats to traditional artistic practices and conventions.

The bullet holes in the artwork are a metaphor for the sacrifices inherent in the evolutionary process. As society embraces AI and undergoes transformation, there are casualties and losses, represented by the desolation of the artwork and a human pulling the AI trigger. Yet, this destruction is not without purpose; it signifies the necessary upheaval and renewal required for progress and evolution to occur.
